Fumed silica A-200 (or comparable grades like Aerosil® 200) is widely utilized in completion fluid stabilization due to its nanoscale particle size (~12 nm), high surface area (~200 m²/g), and excellent suspension/thixotropic properties. Below are key application examples:

1. Preventing Solid Settling in High-Density Brines
Challenge: High-density completion brines (e.g., ZnBr₂, CaBr₂) tend to suffer from solid sedimentation over time, especially under static conditions, leading to inhomogeneous fluid density and potential well control issues.

Solution: Adding 0.5–2% fumed silica A-200K forms a 3D network structure that suspends solids (e.g., weighting agents, corrosion inhibitors) and prevents settling.

Case Example: In a North Sea HPHT well, fumed silica was added to a CaBr₂/ZnBr₂ brine (density 1.8 SG) to stabilize ilmenite weighting agents. The fluid showed no sedimentation after 7 days at 120°C, while untreated brines exhibited >20% settling.
